‘Blue lagoon’ closed to protect newborn seals
Tourists are being temporarily banned from visiting a “blue lagoon” beauty spot in Wales to protect newborn seals.
The National Trust is to close the lagoon in Abereiddy, Pembrokeshire, to the public for six weeks in order to avoid disturbing a breeding colony of up to 5,000 seals in the area.
The Pembrokeshire coastline is home to half the world’s breeding population of grey seals, with 1,400 pups expected to be born.
The lagoon, which is formed out of a flooded slate quarry, whose minerals give the water a blueish-green hue, will be closed from Saturday until Nov 5 but visitors will be able to watch the seals from the coastal path.
