Not Sir Jimmy Greaves

sir – It is striking that Jimmy Greaves (Obituaries, September 20), the highest goal scorer in the history of English top-flight football, died without the nation having honoured him.

In contrast to the current fashion of honouring sportspeople at the beginning or middle of their careers, perhaps the right time to consider their achievements is on retirement.

I hope the honours committee will consider other retired sportspeople, so the greats are appropriately honoured. Sarah Chhetri
