Facebook accused of protecting scammers

Facebook has been accused of protecting scammers who steal victims’ life savings, as the company told MPS it doesn’t flag known fraudsters to other tech companies.

The tech giant and its rival Google said while they share information on terrorist activities, scams are not an area where they co-operate.

MPS criticised the tech companies for “profiting” from fraud by allowing scammers to advertise. In a Treasury committee session yesterday, Tory MP Julian Knight asked Facebook’s Allison Lucas about why it didn’t warn other platforms when it uncovered scams.

She said: “The concerns we would have would be privacy concerns.”
