Macron struck by egg while campaigning as he suffers second attack in three months

- By Rebecca Rosman

A MAN shouted “vive la revolution” and threw an egg at Emmanuel Macron while he was visiting a restaurant trade fair in the eastern city of Lyon yesterday.

According to Lyon Mag, which filmed the incident, the egg bounced off the back of the French president’s shoulder without breaking.

“If he has something to say to me, let him come and say it,” Mr Macron said shortly after the man was arrested. “I’ll talk to him after. Go get him,” Mr Macron told his security detail.

The president’s appetite for mingling with crowds has made him more approachable, but also comes with risks that have created several PR and security headaches for his administration.

Yesterday’s egg toss was not a first for Mr Macron, who is in the midst of his second presidential campaign. While visiting an agricultural trade show during the 2017 presidential campaign, a man launched an egg that broke on top of his head. The previous year, when he was France’s economy minister, he was pelted with eggs while visiting a post office in Paris.

The incident also marks the second time he has been attacked while greeting a crowd in less than three months. In June, while he was shaking hands with people in the south-east town of Tain-l’hermitage, a supporter of the far Right slapped him and shouted: “Down with Macronism.” The offender was given a four-month prison sentence.
