Insulate Britain activist ‘kept in luxury’ by roads boss husband

- By Mason Boycott-owen

TRANSPORT for London (TFL) has been accused of “harbouring extremists” after it was reported that an Insulate Britain activist is married to an employee of the organisation.

Cathy Eastburn, 54, was among those who had been served an injunction after being arrested by police following protests across the UK’S motorway network over the last month.

Her husband, Benedict Plowden, 58, has been working on “getting London moving after the pandemic”, according to TFL, with a spokesman adding that he is leaving the organisation.

Greg Smith MP, who sits on the Commons’ transport select committee, told The Sun: “It is unbelievable that someone in TFL – who have themselves been victim to these extremists – has been looking after these extremists in luxury.”

Ms Eastburn declined to comment on her family situation when approached for a comment by The Daily Telegraph. Quoting a former government chief scientific adviser, she said: “We must face the reality Sir David King means when he says ‘we have to move rapidly, what we do in the next three to four years will determine the future of humanity, unless we make the transitions necessary, we are going to lose what we understand by our civilisation over the coming decades’.

“The country needs Boris to get on with the job of insulating Britain.”

It came as Insulate Britain protesters set fire to injunction papers at the Royal Courts of Justice in London yesterday morning.

Eighteen activists wearing orange hivis vests burnt pages of legal documents that had been individually served on them, on the pavement outside the building.

Nick Onley, 59, a demonstrator from London, said: “It’s a sign of our determination to carry on protesting, to carry on raising this issue until we see some action that we can believe in.”

Inside the High Court, a hearing took place over three injunctions granted to National Highways over the past two months aimed at stopping protesters blocking the M25, Port of Dover and major roads around London.

The court case was adjourned until next Tuesday.
