Silenced on campus

sir – Suzanne Moore (Comment, October 10) rightly draws attention to the extreme protests designed to intimidate and silence Professor Kathleen Stock, who has been advised to have bodyguards on campus and CCTV at her home. She will also have officers on call if she dials 999.

As a lawyer specialising in academic freedom, I believe that these acts against her must be condemned. The University of Sussex must take action to comply with its legal duty to secure freedom of speech for both her and those with similar views who will be invited to visit and speak on its campus in future.
