The 2019 first run of this blackly humorous, Edinburgh-based hit drama, about two brothers’ botched attempt to cover up a drink-driving death, didn’t seem to leave much room for a sequel. But writer Neil Forsyth’s second series slips effortlessly into gear, beginning with elder brother Max’s (Mark Bonnar) release from jail after a two-year stretch, and his efforts to pick up his life where he left off.
Given that his conviction meant he lost everything – his marriage, home, business and profession (being automatically disbarred from practising law) – that proves none too easy. But it does bring him back into the orbit of some of the best characters from last time round, among them psychopathic “businessman” Roy Lynch (Stuart Bowman, taking over from Bill Paterson) and the brilliantly drawn not-as-dense-as-he-looksbut-almost private detective Kenny (Emun Elliott). Where Max’s feckless brother Jake (Jamie Sives) and his duplicitous paramour Angie (Ruth Bradley) might have got to in the meantime is not so obvious. But by the end of this entertaining opening episode, it’s pretty clear that out of sight is most definitely not out of mind. Gerard O’donovan
