The Conjuring (2013)

BBC FOUR, 9PM ★★★★

James Wan’s film is a sturdily built supernatural chiller, highly effective despite an almost total lack of CGI or gore. It takes place in 1971, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga starring as demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. They’re summoned to help the Perron family, whose farm in Rhode Island, a broken-down old house (isn’t it always?), is plagued by the usual nocturnal bangs and cackles.
