JO COX, JUNE 16 2016
Jo Cox, who was Labour MP for Batley and Spen from May 2015, was shot three times and stabbed to death outside Birstall library.
The Remain campaigner was murdered by Thomas Mair, 53, a week before the EU referendum.
She tried to defend herself as she was shot and stabbed 15 times in what was described in court as a “premeditated murder for a political and/or ideological cause”.
Mrs Cox, 41, a mother of two, was the first female MP to be killed. Before her murder, Mair, below, had also conducted internet searches on fellow Remainer William Hague, and Ian Gow, an MP killed by the IRA. Mrs Cox was driving to the library with Fazila Aswat, her manager, and Sandra Major, a senior case worker. Moments after they stepped out of the car, she was attacked by Mair. Ms Aswat repeatedly hit him with her handbag but was ultimately forced to retreat.
Bernard Kenny, 77, a bystander, was stabbed once when he tried to intervene but survived. Mair was sentenced to a whole life term in prison.
