SIR – While operating a British Airways flight from Los Angeles to Manchester in 1993, the most incredible display of the Northern Lights (Letters, October 22) I had ever seen in my 30-year career occurred, lasting some 45 minutes.

I committed the cardinal sin of interrupting the film to advise our passengers of this stunning event and inviting anyone who wished to do so to visit the flight deck to experience the full effect. Amazingly, only one passenger chose to accept my offer – and he was a staff member returning from holiday.
