The highway code

-

Fittingly for a family of timepieces celebrating a major road network, the three new Nomos Glashütte Autobahn watches symbolise the connection between places.

With their tachymeter-style dials and ultra-thin Calibre DUW 6101 engines, the A9, A3 and A7 models (all limited to 175 pieces to mark 175 years of Glashütte watchmaking heritage) certainly reference German highways. But more than this, they express a duality of spirit: half Berlin, where their designer Werner Aisslinger is based, and half the bucolic surrounds of Glashütte, where the watches have been made.

The urban finds expression in the models’ primary colours and the almost Bauhaus styling of the bracelets. The rural, meanwhile, is encapsulated in the philosophy of unhurried precision watchmaking that underpins each component.

“Glashütte is the perfect landscape to make watches that will last an eternity,” says Nomos Glashütte’s managing director Judith Borowski. “Here, the tick-tock is the only thing the watchmaker hears. In this place, not much changes – and this helps to perfect what has been done here for the past 175 years.” Elizabeth Doerr Nomos Autobahn Director’s Cut Limited Edition; £3,800; nomos-glashuette.com
