Nowhere to go
SIR – Sadly “the revolting phenomenon of ‘wild toileting’’’ (“Our public loos are crumbling – and with them, our civilisation”, Comment, November 14) is set to continue for the foreseeable future on Epsom Downs.
The public lavatories have been closed since March 2020 and it has just been decided to demolish them, with no plans for a replacement.
This means that the Downs can no longer be enjoyed by those for whom such facilities are critical. There are insanitary conditions in some places.
What’s incomprehensible is that this decision has been taken by the Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators, a body whose responsibilities include preserving the area in its natural state of beauty and maintaining the public right of access.
