♦ The scientist Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science and Smith-zadeh Professor in Engineerin­g at the University of California, Berkeley, is this year’s Reith Lecturer. Across his four lectures he considers the future of Artificial Intelligen­ce and our human relationsh­ip with it. In his opening talk, he reflects on the origins of AI and our perception of it dating back to Aristotle, defines the extent of AI, articulate­s some of its successes and failures, and considers our fears of it – and whether these are justified.
