Last shot What next for tennis star?
What next?
Djokovic was to be placed back in detention at 9pm UK time last night (8am today local time) and interviewed by immigration officials. He was to meet his solicitors ahead of a 11.15pm (10.15am) Federal Court of Australia submissions hearing. After that, he was to be taken to an immigration hotel at around 1am (2pm), for the night before a full hearing starting overnight (Sunday morning).
There appeared a determination in court to conclude the case before his scheduled Australian Open first-round match the following day.
What if he wins?
Djokovic’s deportation nightmare would finally be over – barring an unlikely appeal by the government.
If he loses?
It would wreck his Open hopes unless he was able to lodge another appeal and cleared to play, pending the outcome. He could be banned from Australia for three years – except in circumstances that affect the country’s interest – and it may affect his ability to travel elsewhere.
