Sports ‘freebies’ for Khan as the capital mopped up

- By Mason Boycott-owen

SADIQ KHAN attended two events using free tickets the day after London was devastated by Storm Eunice.

The Mayor of London left the capital and went to a football match and a boxing event in the north of England despite London being under its first red warning for strong winds.

The gales shredded part of the Millennium Dome and one woman died in the north of the city.

It comes after Mr Khan accepted hospitality and tickets worth more than £17,000 over six months. The Labour

Mayor of London was spotted on Saturday attending a Premier League match at Anfield, where Liverpool played Norwich, before accepting further tickets to sit ringside for the fight between Amir Khan and Kell Brook in Manchester.

It is understood that Mr Khan attended the match in Liverpool as a guest of the football club, while he went to the boxing as a guest of Amir Khan.

Though the costs of the tickets for the events have not been made public, they will be declared in the mayor’s gifts and hospitality register at a later date.

Between June and November last year, Mr Khan accepted tickets to events including five Euros matches, the premier of No Time To Die, and four tickets to see Lord Lloyd-webber’s Cinderella. Mr Khan on Sept 4 also accepted tickets to England’s fourth Test against India at the Oval.

Critics said Mr Khan, who earns more than £150,000 a year, should spend his time focusing on tackling crime.

Gareth Bacon, a London MP and former London Assembly Member, said: “It seems Sadiq Khan will turn up to the opening of an envelope if there’s a photo op in it, but repeatedly refuses to take responsibility for record levels of knife crime under his watch and Transport for London in financial disarray.”

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: “It is the mayor’s top priority to keep Londoners safe, which is why he has invested £1billion in policing, more than any other mayor, helping to put an extra 1,300 police officers on our streets.

“As mayor of a host city for the Euros, Sadiq had an important role attending the tournament and welcoming key stakeholders from around the world to Wembley. It is absolutely right that the mayor is a champion of the capital’s creative and sporting sectors.”
