Musk and girlfriend admit secret arrival of baby girl

Musician Grimes reveals they have daughter after journalist hears ‘telltale’ crying at her Texas home

SPACEX founder Elon Musk has welcomed a second child with his on-off musician girlfriend Grimes, calling her Exa Dark Siderael Musk, or Y for short.

The pair are already parents to son X AE A-12, known as X, who was born in May 2020, but during a sit down interview at her home in Austin, Texas, Grimes admitted the couple had a daughter after “unmistakable” noises were heard coming from upstairs.

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, revealed that the baby girl was born via a surrogate in December and her name is a tribute to supercomputing, space and time.

Devin Gordon, a Vanity Fair journalist, was interviewing Grimes at her home when he heard a baby crying in an upstairs room.

“I hear it again,” he wrote. “This time it’s multiple cries, and it’s unmistakable.

I’ve got two kids. That’s a baby. And I can tell by the frozen look on my host’s face that she heard it too.

“So I brace myself to ask the strangest question of my career: ‘Do you have another baby in your life, Grimes?’

“Her body clenches and she looks away,” he wrote. “I’m not at liberty to speak on these things,” she begins, and then all in a tumble, she says: “Whatever is going on with family stuff, I just feel like kids need to stay out of it, and

‘So I brace myself to ask the strangest question of my career: “Do you have another baby in your life, Grimes?”’

X is just out there. I mean, I think E is really seeing him as a protégé and bringing him to everything and stuff.

“… X is out there. His situation is like that. But, yeah, I don’t know.”

“Did she really think I wasn’t going to hear a baby?” Mr Gordon wrote.

“I don’t know. I don’t know what I was thinking,” Grimes replied, with her head in her hands.

Eventually, she told the truth, adding: “The best situation here is me training the girl and him” – Mr Musk – “training the boy.”

In “Exa Dark Siderael Musk”, Exa refers to the super-computing term exaflops, which is the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second.

Dark is a reference to dark matter, which is a hypothetical form of matter that makes up a huge chunk of the universe, but that science does not yet fully understand.

And finally, Siderael, pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el”, was described by Grimes as “a more elven” spelling of Sidereal, which is “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time”.

The baby is also nicknamed Sailor Mars by Grimes and Mr Musk, as a nod to the Sailor Moon manga series.

The couple were reported to have split in 2021, after Mr Musk told Time magazine they were “semi-separated”.

However, Grimes appeared to confirm they have reunited, telling Vanity Fair: “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid.

“We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time. We just have our own thing going [on].”
