‘Cinderella’ thief jailed after losing shoe at shop

A thief who left a shoe at a crime scene in what police described as a “great Cinderella impression” has been jailed.

Oneil Welch, 38, left the Asda store in Peterborough without paying for items, including a 32in television, on Sept 17 last year. As he fled he got into a scuffle with a security guard, losing his right shoe. While escaping he threatened another person, taking their mobile phone and £50.

The defendant was arrested after police checked CCTV footage from the store and recognised him.

Welch admitted to robbery, theft and common assault, and was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on Monday to nine months in jail.
