African republic adopts Bitcoin as legal tender

-

The Central African Republic has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, becoming the second country in the world to do so, after El Salvador.

“This move places the Central African Republic on the map of the world’s boldest and most visionary countries,” said Obed Namsio, the president’s chief of staff.

A leading opposition figure said the measure was intended to undermine use of the CFA franc currency. Martin Ziguele, a former prime minister, said the law heralding the switch was approved “by proclamation”.
