Former leader Suu Kyi jailed for five years

-

Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi was yesterday sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, the latest in a series of trials that activists say are intended to keep her behind bars for the rest of her life.

The junta court found her guilty of accepting cash and gold bars totalling $600,000 (£477,000) from the former head of Yangon – the largest city in the country previously known as Burma. Ms Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since February 2021 when a military coup ousted her government, has denied all accusations.
