Against national days
SIR – I love to celebrate my country, but would not want to do it on a designated national day, as proposed by Philip Johnston (Comment, April 27).
That Britain and Denmark are the only countries not to have a formal national day demonstrates our essential quirkiness of character. Moreover, while young countries need such a day to puff themselves up, our island story stretches back centuries. We have nothing to prove.

SIR – My grandfather worked at an armament depot until he retired in 1956. The August holiday was then at the start of the month, so they also had “fatigue day” in October.
Maybe we should reintroduce this instead of another spring holiday. Lelsey Ruffle
