145 child hepatitis cases identified in the UK
Health officials have identified 34 more children with sudden onset hepatitis, taking the total to 145 across the UK.
Hepatitis, or liver inflammation, is rare in children, but a recent spike in global cases has raised concerns.
The European Centre for Disease Control has said more than 200 cases have been detected globally, 55 of which are in the EU. At least 17 children have had liver transplants, including 10 in the UK. This week, the first known case in Asia was found in Japan, and in the US more than 24 cases have been recorded.
It is thought an adenovirus – a viral infection which usually causes the common cold – may be to blame.
