Roman hoard to go under the hammer

-

Three friends armed with a metal detector discovered a Roman hoard worth tens of thousands of pounds during a camping trip in Wiltshire.

Robert Abbott, 53, from Essex, uncovered some discarded metal tent pegs, but dug a little deeper to find a silver Roman coin thought to be some 600 years old. His friends Mick Rae, 63, and David Allen, 59, helped him to dig up a further 160 coins.

The coins, discovered in September 2020, will be auctioned by Noonans on May 17 and are expected to sell for between £30,000 and £40,000.
