DIARY OF A MODERN DAD
Beatles’ songs are alive and well at primary school… after a fashion
As he approaches his 80th birthday, Sir Paul Mccartney is as popular as ever. He’s just begun a tour of the United States. He’s about to play Glastonbury. And even little children know his work. It’s true. My son’s school recently held a talent contest and, apparently, one boy sang a Beatles song.
“Wow,” I said, when my son told me. “What song was it?”
“You have to guess,” he said. “I’ll give you a clue. It begins with an A.”
“Hmm. Let’s think. All You Need is Love?”
“No.”
“A Hard Day’s Night?” “No.”
I racked my brains. All My Loving? And I Love Her? Across the Universe? Surely not A Day in the Life. That would be an unorthodox choice for a primary school talent contest. Not least because of all the drug references.
Eventually I gave up. I couldn’t think of any more Beatles songs beginning with A. “Go on,” I said. “What was it?”
“Alana Rigby,” he said. Ah well. At least it wasn’t
A Jude.
