Queen to attend pared-back State Opening of Parliament

- By Hannah Furness

THE Queen intends to play her full constitutional role at the State Opening of Parliament, even as she signals the end of an era by stepping back from hosting her Buckingham Palace garden parties.

The Queen hopes to read her customary speech to open Parliament on Tuesday, as aides insert “tweaks” to the traditional ceremonial for her comfort.

She will travel by car to the Houses of Parliament, wear day dress without a heavy crown, and walk as short a route as possible.

It is understood measures will be put in place for the tactful filming of her entrance and exit, with part of the walk shielded from cameras and the event pared back as much as is possible. The military elements will be altered, with no lining of the route as used to happen each year when the Queen travelled by carriage.

The Queen is nevertheless hoping to read the speech, with a final decision to be confirmed by Buckingham Palace on

Tuesday morning, shortly before the State Opening is due to begin.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will be at her side, and the Prince will be able to assist his mother in the walk to her throne.

There is still widespread speculation that the Prince will read the speech should his mother not feel well enough, although as one of her constitutional duties this will require a Royal Commission or Letters Patent.

On the two occasions the Queen has previously missed it, the Lord Chancellor has delivered the speech.

Although the Queen is aiming to continue in her key duties, Buckingham Palace yesterday confirmed she would no longer be hosting her garden parties.

The Queen will be represented by other members of her family for the three parties this year, with a long afternoon of standing and walking no longer suitable for the 96-year-old monarch.

The parties have allowed the Queen to meet members of the public from all walks of life during her long reign.
