Plants are my new secret splurge that I have to hide

-

Quick question: does anyone else hide evidence of their trip to the garden centre in the boot of the car?

Maybe it’s an age and stage thing. I no longer buy gorgeous-but-impractical footwear that stays in a bag under the passenger seat, until the moment comes to smuggle them indoors under cover of darkness.

Instead, it’s glazed pots, trays of Cosmos and Nemesia in every colourway gently wilting in the back until the proverbial coast is clear and I can sneak them through the hallway and into the back without being caught.

If I go on an outing with a friend and she spots her husband’s car in the drive, we’ve been known to hide her plants behind the bins, while giggling hysterically. Neither of us is quite sure why we do this. It’s not as if we’ve blown the grocery budget (me) or the school fees (her). Why the giddy secrecy? If anyone can shed light on this illicit thrill, do please get in touch.
