The bottom line is being skinny is just old fashioned, says Beckham

Former Spice Girl is lifting weights to improve her derrière after admiring ‘curvy’ women of Miami

‘I’ve always been a bit scared of weights but it turns out I love them. I’ve even got those special gloves to wear ... I’ve got so much more muscle tone now’

SHE eats little more than grilled fish and steamed vegetables.

But Victoria Beckham, 48, has called time on the desire to be thin, declaring it an “old fashioned attitude”.

The former Spice Girl is unlikely to be found at her local fish and chip shop anytime soon, however.

Rather, she has revealed she is trying to improve her derrière by increasing muscle tone and has taken to lifting weights at the gym.

Beckham, who was once said to have a 23-inch waist, suggested that women today want to look “healthy and curvy”.

She said she considered curvier women better role models for her 10-year-old daughter, Harper.

The singer turned fashion designer was speaking to Grazia magazine to promote her latest collection of figurehugging dresses called VB Body.

The line evokes her first collection of outfits in the mid-2000s, before the creation of her fashion empire.

The collection is partly inspired by time spent in Miami where her husband, footballer David, co-owns the Inter Miami football team.

Beckham told the magazine: “There are a lot of really curvy women in Miami, and they really own it, you know? They walk along Miami beach with not a lot of clothes on, and they look fantastic.

“They show their bodies off with such confidence.

“I found both their attitude and their style really liberating.

“And as a mother, I loved the fact that Harper was around women who were really celebrating their curves and enjoying how they look.”

She added: “It’s an old-fashioned attitude, wanting to be really thin.

“I think women today want to look healthy, and curvy.

“They want to have some boobs – and a bum. The curvier you are, the better my VB Body dresses look.”

The mother of four said she wanted to get “as good a bottom as I can get” and had been doing squats every morning while also changing her fitness regime to focus on lifting heavy weights five or six days a week with David and their personal trainer.

“I’ve always been a bit scared of weights but it turns out I love them. I’ve even got those special gloves to wear,” she said.

“It’s good to switch things up and keep your body guessing. I’ve got so much more muscle tone now.”

In February, David Beckham revealed that he and his wife, who wed in 1999, had only once shared food from the same plate.

He told the River Cafe Table 4 podcast: “I get quite emotional about food and wine.

“When I’m eating something great I want everyone to try it.

“Unfortunately, I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years.

“Since I’ve met Victoria she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables. She’ll very rarely deviate away from there.”

He added: “The only time that she’s probably ever shared something that’s been on my plate was actually when she was pregnant with Harper.

“And it was the most amazing thing. It was one of my favourite evenings.

“I can’t remember what it was – but I know that she’s not eaten it since.”

The Essex-born celebrity had previously told the same podcast that she did not eat food cooked in oil, butter or sauces, red meat or dairy.

She said that her comfort food was a single slice of wholegrain toast with salt on it, while for her birthday she pushes the boat out with a fruit cake.

Beckham’s fashion business has suffered in recent years, reportedly racking up total losses of more than £46 million since it launched in 2008.

Beckham suggested her husband was a fan of her new look.

“Much as I do dress for myself, I also love the fact that he loves me in these dresses. Men love to see a bit of shape,” she added.
