ENGINEER WITH EYE TO THE FUTURE.

-

The engineer has had an eye to the future development of the district, and though the road now under construction has a width of 50ft he provides for an increase in road space to 80ft between kerbs without encroaching upon the area in which sewers, water, gas, and electric mains, and other services are carried. An 80ft highway is looking well ahead, but it is a prudent precaution, and the great merit of the scheme is that if the road has to be widened none of the underground mains have to be interfered with. They are all laid beneath the footpaths, and nothing is put down under the roadway, as it is being made today, nor as it will extend if the Council decides at some future date that widening is necessary. Those who will travel on the Great West Road need have no fear of meriting a notice that the highway is up to deal with the renewal or repair of mains. Pedestrians may be inconvenienced, but vehicles may proceed on their way without interruption.
