Scaled-up sports

-

SIR – It is fair to suggest that, as the population grows taller, football goals should be made larger (Letters, May 16).

The same considerations apply to other sports. Cricket pitches should be made longer (and, to even things up, bats smaller) and tennis nets higher.

If such changes were made, at least to the professional game, finesse might begin to replace intimidation. These sports would become sports again and less of a gladiatorial spectacle.

SIR – I have always thought that having a second ball in play would make football much more interesting.

There are only two scenarios to consider: the balls going in opposite directions or both going the same way. In either case, it sounds exciting. Keith Macpherson
