Politics and princes

-

SIR – Nick Timothy is right to remind us of the danger of the Royal family becoming too political (Comment, May 16), but wrong to characterise the divide between Prince Harry and the rest of the family as “significant in that it presents two very different visions for what the monarchy should do”.

While Prince Harry will always remain a member of the Royal family, as the Queen has made clear, he can no longer be regarded as part of the monarchy after being stripped of royal duties and military titles.

One cannot therefore contrast his incautious readiness to give political opinions with the conventional approach followed by William and Kate.

The reality is that Prince Harry has no authority to speak for the monarchy and his comments on the subject can have no constitutional significance. Peter Birts QC
