Isle of light

Bolts of lightning illuminate the sky over Ventnor on the Isle of Wight in this electrifying image captured by photographer Jamie Russell, as thunderstorms passed over the country on Wednesday night. The Met Office said there had been around 28,000 lightning strikes above the UK and the English Channel through to yesterday morning with more than 25mm of rain falling in some areas. The storms caused havoc for air passengers with some flights to Gatwick airport having to be diverted.
