Time for the Gold State Coach to shine again
SIR – Before the Silver Jubilee in 1977, the spokes of the wheels of the Gold State Coach, kept at the Royal Mews, were found to be loose, and arrangements were made to soak them in a rugby plunge bath.
On so doing, all the gold leaf on the wheels came off. The Royal Mews were obliged to regild the whole coach.
As it needed regilding after 25 years, will it have been refurbished once more after 45 years, ahead of the Platinum Jubilee weekend? AHW Izod
