Trusty steed for Her Majesty in 18 Trooping events

-

The Queen developed a close rapport with many of her horses but Burmese has always been described as her favourite.

The black mare was presented to the monarch by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1969.

The Queen rode Burmese in 18 consecutive Trooping the Colour ceremonies, from 1969 to 1986, after which she used a carriage. Sylvia Stanier, a trainer, said at the time that the Queen had a rapport with Burmese.

In June 1981, six blank shots were fired at the Queen during Trooping, startling the horse, but the Queen quickly brought it back under control.

The horse was retired from ceremonial duties in 1986 and worked for the police for two years. It was then put out to pasture in Windsor Home Park. It died aged 28 in 1990 and is buried in the park.
