Infinite genders and beyond

-

People are not to be laughed at for their gender and sexuality. Sex, though, is almost always funny in practice, as comedians from Aristophanes onwards have proved. That is why the discovery that the Civil Service harbours more than 100 self-defined genders opens up endless vistas of absurdity. “Whilst there is not an infinite number of genders there is no number limit,” the Cabinet Office declares. This sounds too narrow. Why can’t the number of genders be infinite? They already include omnigender, gender outlaw and greygender. What if you identify as queerfish? Aren’t you then entitled to access to a heated aquarium and a regular supply of ants’ eggs? On the infinite side of things, darkgender would be the equivalent of dark matter – impossible to detect, and ideal for those working from home several light years away.
