Suits you, sir? The Bishop’s ill-fitting garments
The Bishop of London has revealed her robes do not quite fit her because they were made for male clerics.
Dame Sarah Mullally said that while she was “excited” ahead of the thanksgiving service yesterday, this was tinged with nervousness.
Dame Sarah, who led the blessing at St Paul’s, told BBC’S Breakfast that she was nervous about the ceremonial regalia she needed to wear.
She said: “It’s a coat called the George V coat. It’s quite an old coat, which is a cape, but of course it was designed for men.
“Because I’m the first woman who happens to be the Bishop of London. So, it doesn’t sit quite as well on me, so I’m slightly nervous.”
Dame Sarah added that the Queen’s Christian faith has “always shaped her” and she felt privileged to play a part in the service and “give thanks” to Her Majesty for her service to the country.
