The Jubilee enables the British to realise what they share that makes them proud

-

SIR – I’m always proud to be British, but only on occasions like this Jubilee does it seem other people realise why. Jeremy Bateman

Luton, Bedfordshire

SIR – Why cannot our politicians show the same integrity and dedication to their work as the Queen does? Professor M M R Williams Eastbourne, East Sussex

SIR – Our monarchy is far from ideal, but an elected president would cause greater dissatisfaction, as it would be based on Left or Right politics.

Rob Dorrell

Bath, Somerset

SIR – There should be no confusion as to whether the Queen is Defender of the Faith or Defender of Faith. She is both.

She is Defender of the Church of England of which she is head, and she is also Defender of all the faiths held by our many ethnic groups in the United Kingdom.

Christopher Foyle

Maldon, Essex

SIR – How refreshing it was to hear an archbishop proclaim his Christianity and celebrate Christian values at the thanksgiving service yesterday. Peter Godfrey

Goostrey, Cheshire

SIR – What wonderful music we heard from St Paul’s yesterday. As ever, John Rutter made a significant contribution. He is a composer whose words hardly any choir here or indeed abroad, especially in the United States, has not sung. Why is he not Sir John Rutter? Dr Richard Soper

Great Saxham, Suffolk

SIR – If the Metropolitan Police can, within seconds, arrest activists in the Mall for obstructing the highway, why does it take so long on the M25? Peter J Milford

Lymington, Hampshire

SIR – A jarring element in BBC vox pops about the Jubilee, on radio or television, has been the desperate search for republicans and antiroyalists, in virtually every interview, live or recorded. Is this a required form of “balance”?

Brian Milton

London E2

SIR – I must congratulate the BBC on Thursday’s coverage. It was a truly wonderful day and barely any bristling came from this licence payer.

However, on BBC Breakfast yesterday, the BBC wokisms were back in force. The patronising tone and carefully shaped questions of Naga Munchetty brought the efforts plummeting to earth with a bump. Kate Peeters

Kingsbridge, Devon

SIR – Trooping the Colour always begins with the mass bands playing and marching to The Huguenots.

The BBC did not broadcast it but had somebody chatting instead.

John Kirby

Yealmpton, Devon

SIR – Thanks to Youtube I was able to see fantastic coverage of Trooping the Colour without the constant interviews added by the boring BBC. The locations were perfect, as was all the sound.

Mary Wiedman

Piccotts End, Hertfordshire

SIR – This could be the last jubilee for the foreseeable future.

If the Prince of Wales becomes king in the next five years he would be over 100 for his Silver Jubilee. Prince William might well then be into his nineties for his.

Terence Waters

Nether Whitacre, Warwickshire

SIR – In general I find the attitude of the French government towards us irritating, especially the pettiness in evidence since Brexit.

Then I read about the gift that President Emmanuel Macron made to the Queen of a very special grey mare Fabuleux de Maucourt, from the president’s Garde Républicaine, with her accoutrements , in commemoration of the Platinum Jubilee (report, June 2). What a splendid gesture!

All is forgiven – for today anyway. Robert Hickman

Andover, Hampshire

SIR – Regarding the Jubilee, a spokesman for the French Embassy in London spoke about “celebrating Franco-british friendship”.

If the attitude of France to Brexit, illegal migration and the war in Ukraine is anything to go by, we should be thankful they are not enemies.

Stephen Howey

Woodford Green, Essex

SIR – We are celebrating here with knitted crown jewels and corgis (below).

Dr Graham Rhodes

Everton, Hampshire

SIR – I am grateful to Allison Pearson (report, June 3) for her appreciation of the gallant drum horses Harry and Eddie. Every year at Trooping the Colour I listen out for their names and recognition of their importance in the parade. I bet the Queen does too. Deirdre Towers

Rugby, Warwickshire

SIR – I was a young police constable at the time of the Silver Jubilee. One of my duties was to visit the organisers of street parties on my beat (Letters, June 1) and discuss safety arrangements.

Over a nice cup of tea, I explained that there would be no objections as long as access for the use of emergency services vehicles was provided.

Every party went off successfully in an environment of fun, happiness, celebration and safety, and without any council interference.

Alan G Barstow

Onslunda, Skåne, Sweden

SIR – Where on earth did the word

coronated come from?

Richard Davies

Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire
