Returning to epic mode, Roland Emmerich restages the mammoth naval battle between the US and Japan that changed the course of the Second World War. It doesn’t get swallowed up in jingoism, offering portraits from both sides, and the dive-bombing raids on Japan’s aircraft carriers are truly exhilarating. The cast includes Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Patrick Wilson and Woody Harrelson.
