Peter O’toole’s favourite Yorkshire pub has been saved for future generations thanks to a campaign to have notable pub interiors listed.

Whitelock’s Ale House, in Leeds, above, has had its heritage status upgraded to Grade II*.

The watering hole was a favourite haunt of the actor, who grew up in the city, and other cultural greats such as Margot Fonteyn, the ballet dancer, and John Betjeman, the poet. The pub’s interior, with its fixed-bench seating, brass barley-twist columns, stained-glass windows and a ceramictiled bar counter, dates back to 1895.

Other pubs that have had their status upgraded by Historic England include, clockwise from top right, the Black Horse in Preston, Lancashire; the Victoria in Great Harwood, Lancashire; the Red Lion in Westminster, central London; and the Harrow Inn in Steep, East Hampshire, Devon.
