EU chauvinism
sir – In their comments on the Government’s proposals for the Northern Ireland Protocol, the Taoiseach, Sinn Féin and other Brit-hating politicians have revealed their true colours.
Our Government values our sovereignty and wants to preserve peace. The EU sees Northern Ireland as its colony, and wishes the UK ill. Keith Punshon

sir – The European Commission’s vice-president, Maroš Šefčovič, says it will be “unrealistic” to renegotiate the Protocol (report, June 13).
It won’t be unrealistic if, through a process of honest negotiation, Northern Ireland’s citizens are given proper access to their UK markets, goods, produce and tax regimes. Nor will it be unrealistic if peace and harmony flourish, businesses prosper and the Belfast Agreement continues to be maintained.

sir – Why doesn’t the UK Government simply ignore the parts of the Protocol that it does not like?
The EU has set a precedent. When Germany breached fiscal rules, it simply carried on as before.

sir – The speed at which the EU has moved to launch lawsuits against Britain following publication of the plans to override the Northern Ireland Protocol is in stark contrast to its dithering over sanctions against Russia and the supply of arms to Ukraine.
It seems that punishing us for Brexit is more important to Brussels than stopping Vladimir Putin from destroying a European democracy. Malcolm Symonds
