Cyclists prioritise pothole repairs over cycle lanes

- By Claudia Rowan

THREE quarters of drivers want the Government to fix potholes rather than build cycle lanes – and most cyclists agree, a survey has found.

The survey of 2,000 people, 712 of whom are cyclists, found that 78 per cent of drivers would rather the Government fix potholes than build cycle lanes. According to the research, conducted by Opinium and insurance provider Insurethegap, 71 per cent of cyclists agreed.

However, there was disagreement over whether cyclists should pay road tax, with over three fifths (61 per cent) of drivers saying that they should, but just 45 per cent of cyclists agreeing.

On insurance, 84 per cent of drivers agreed that cyclists, like drivers, should have third-party liability, while 63 per cent of cyclists agreed.

Ben Wooltorton, of Insurethegap, said: “Drivers and cyclists are often seen as road rivals, but actually many drivers are also cyclists, and just want the roads to be safe for all users.

“The need to improve the quality of roads is something which unites drivers and cyclists.”
