The Duke of Wellington, a fellow Old Etonian, went from being a national hero one minute to being booed and hissed at, as prime minister, the next.

Soon, however, he was a hero again, ultimately granted a state funeral and burial in St Paul’s Cathedral, next to Lord Nelson.
