At the European Bridge Championsh­ips in Funchal, Madeira, writes Julian Pottage, Bridge Correspond­ent, play is reaching a conclusion in all the teams events. In the Open Teams after 24 matches Ireland is in a World Championsh­ip qualifying position, lying sixth. England are one place away from a qualifying spot, in ninth place. At the same stage, Wales are 24th and Scotland 29th. In the Women’s Teams after 14 matches England is in a World Championsh­ip qualifying position, in seventh, with Ireland a couple of places outside in 10th place. In the Mixed Teams after 15 matches England is in a World Championsh­ip qualifying position in eighth place but Ireland and Scotland are well down the field. In the Seniors Teams after 19 matches England has moved up to 10th place but is over 20 VPS behind eighth placed France.
