Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022) Paramount+

This comedy-drama is based on the true story of Jerry and Marge Selbee, a retired couple who worked out how they could win money reliably through their state lottery. Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening star as the loveable pair. This launches on Paramount+, available on its own or to Sky Cinema subscribers, along with the platform’s other new film, Beavis and Butt-head Do the Universe.

Good-time Girl (1948, b/w) Talking Pictures TV, 12.15pm ★★★

In this racy British film a young girl (Diana Dors) is hauled in front of a juvenile magistrate (Flora Robson) for delinquency. In an effort to put her on the right path, the magistrate relates the tale of Gwen Rawlings (Jean Kent), a woman who set herself on a similar track as a child with catastrophic consequences. This risks appearing as an outmoded morality tale about loose women, but it’s an effective tragedy.

A Walk in the Woods (2015) Film4, 6.55pm ★★★

Robert Redford plays famed travel writer Bill Bryson opposite Nick Nolte in this comedy about a pair of ageing friends who hike the Appalachian Trail. The main focus is the pair’s curmudgeonly relationship as their journey places them under low-stakes strain, and there’s an impressive supporting cast that includes Kristen Schaal, Nick Offerman and Emma Thompson. A relaxing evening watch.
