IS THE NAVY SAFE?
When the King held his recent inspection of the Atlantic Fleet the Admiralty arranged a very effective spectacular demonstration of an air attack, which was carried out under the orders of Admiral Sir Charles Madden, the Commander-in-chief. He directed that as the Fleet steamed in the Channel it should be attacked by aircraft, it being understood, of course, that the Fleet would offer no defence, for neither pilots nor aeroplanes could be risked. So the ships of war proceeded towards a point about ten miles away from an air station ashore, and the pilots of the aeroplanes, knowing exactly what was expected of them, swooped down upon the Fleet and launched torpedoes. The whole business was quite interesting and instructive, but very unreal.
