Spider-man: Far from Home (2019) BBC Three, 8pm ★★★★★

Peter Parker goes to Europe on a summer trip in this fun comic book outing, a sorbet in blockbuster form. The film works best when it lets itself be a teenage movie: Tom Holland’s Spider-man (a fun mix of cocky and earnest) would rather enjoy his trip than be a superhero, but his efforts are foiled by the demands of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and machinations courtesy of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).

The Conjuring 2 (2016) BBC Three, 10pm ★★★

The second Conjuring film, but the third in what is by now an eight-film “Conjuring Universe”. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as the real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time they are in London to help out the Hodgson family with a poltergeist in their home. Director James Wan is on fantastic and creepy form as he adapts a real story that gripped media from 1977 to 1979.

Alien 3 (1992) ITV4, 10pm ★★★

A shaven-headed Sigourney Weaver returns for the third helping of the xenomorph-busting sci-fi series. This time the world’s least lucky woman has crash landed on a penal colony, where another terrifying alien lurks. The lack of guns adds a creeping tension, particularly after the action of Aliens, and Weaver is superb in the lead role, but director David Fincher would go on to far greater things.
