NHS can free up funds by cutting management
sir – NHS England says that pay rises for staff must be funded by cutting back on diagnostic capacity (Leading Article, July 20).
I propose, instead, that it axes some of the dozens of equality, inclusion and diversity manager posts that are currently being advertised with salaries of between £50,000 and £100,000.
In the past two years the number of NHS managers has doubled, while frontline NHS staff numbers remain the same. I can confidently predict that reducing managers would have no detrimental effect on NHS services. In fact, the exact opposite is likely to be the case. Dr Fiona Underhill
