Bring on the bangers:whitney vs Noughties

- By Ben Riley-smith

LIZ TRUSS has revealed her favourite song is I Wanna Dance (With Somebody) by Whitney Houston, as musical insights about the two Tory leadership candidates emerged yesterday.

The Foreign Secretary also said she is partial to belting out songs in karaoke as she gave her first broadcast interviews in the race to succeed Boris Johnson.

But for Rishi Sunak, more modern melodies have become the feature of his campaign – he listens to the radio station “Heart 00s”, with tunes from the early 2000s. He is said to have described the station as playing “bangers” and supposedly listens to it so much that it grates on those in his entourage.

The titbits surfaced as the final two candidates standing in the race to be the next prime minister began an intense six weeks of nationwide campaigning.

At the centre of the debate is their policy differences – not least on when and how to cut tax – as Tory members and the wider public will also get to know the candidates themselves.

Ms Truss has avoided broadcast interviews in the initial fortnight of the campaign, which was decided by Tory MPS, but yesterday spoke to both the

BBC and GB News. Ms Truss told GB News on her musical tastes: “I think maybe the one thing people don’t know about me is I do love 1980s music and I do love karaoke.

“I like to enjoy music as well. My favourite song is I Wanna Dance (With Somebody) by Whitney Houston.”

One eagle-eyed Twitter user noted that had not always been the case. Ms Truss two decades earlier said her favourite song was I Try by Macy Gray.

Mr Sunak usually listens to Capital FM when he is being driven between political events, but that has changed to the recently launched “Heart 00s”.
