Mother avoids jail after killing her infant daughter

- By Jack Hardy and Martin Evans

A MOTHER who was convicted of killing her 10-week-old daughter has been spared jail.

Lily-mai Hurrell Saint George died just six days after she was discharged in the care of her parents, Lauren Saint George and David Hurrell, despite warnings from health professionals that she was at risk of neglect.

For the first two months of her life, medical staff at Barnet Hospital’s neonatal unit cared for Lily-mai round the clock until she was finally strong enough to be sent home.

But the nursing staff who had looked after her reacted with horror when they discovered social workers from Haringey council – the same local authority involved in the Baby P and Victoria Climbie cases – were planning to release the baby into her parents’ care.

On Jan 31 2018, Lily-mai suffered 18 rib fractures, a leg fracture and a fatal head injury at the hands of her 25-yearold mother, who was suffering from postnatal depression. She died in hospital on Feb 2, when surgeons turned off her life support machine owing to the extent of her brain damage.
