Nightclubs and B&BS given floor to tell stories
THE working-class histories of Leicester’s nightclubs and Morecambe’s bed and breakfasts are to be celebrated in a project by Historic England.
The “everyday heritage” grants aim to draw attention to overlooked historic places and working-class history, with Historic England saying it wanted to “address the imbalance over which histories are remembered”.
The grants, which total £774,000, were announced for 57 programmes in England. The Leicester project, which will receive £10,000, features an exhibition of photography focused on music of black origin and its role in the past 50 years of the city’s nightlife. Morecambe Heritage, meanwhile, will get the same amount of money to tell the story of landladies and landlords of the seaside town’s B&BS up to the 1980s.
“These community-led projects demonstrate that heritage is all around us,” said Duncan Wilson of Historic England.
