Serene electric cars

-

sir – It’s interesting to read letters (July 26) from people who haven’t experienced the serenity of driving an electric vehicle.

Last year, we moved over to leased electric Renault Zoes. The monthly fixed-term rate is less than we previously paid for Fiestas. We have a home charger that was subsidised by two grants, one from the British and one from the Scottish government. We charge at off-peak times at a fraction of the cost of petrol or diesel, and our total electricity bill each month is currently less than £60, despite driving 1,500 miles between us.

Our power supply in Scotland is mainly renewable, and while the environmental credentials of the batteries are not lily-white, I’d rather cycle behind an EV or hydrogen bus.

Long journeys are more challenging, but the majority are far less than the 240-or-so mile range we can achieve. For commutes EVS are perfect.

Nicola Window Aberdeen sir – I seriously considered buying an electric vehicle and paid a refundable deposit. However, after a short time spent trying to find suitable charging points on Zap-map, I developed a severe case of range anxiety and realised that this would be a regular occurrence. I got my money back. Graeme Williams

sir – We made the journey from West Sussex to see family in Thurso in 13 hours in our low-emission Volvo, with one stop for fuel and a sandwich.

Jack Rear (Lifestyle, July 23) concluded that his four-day journey from Land’s End to John O’groats by EV cost £48.81. He did not include the cost of hotels and meals.
