STAGE SENSATION.

-

Donner und Blitzen! Can’t you see how this sort of thing extracts thrills from you, whether you like it or not? And, rightly or wrongly, some of us like it..

Of course, as its critics point out, this sort of production demands a very Prussianistic handling, and its producer must be a tyrant. Jessner, who began producing at the Staatstheater in 1919, has applied this style of stagery to old plays. His later followers are developing it, and in some ways modifying if, by applying it to new ones written, as well as produced, in the Expressionismus manner. Among these young dramatists the most interesting, perhaps, is Ernst Tollerhis latest play – a story of the English industrial troubles of a hundred years ago, called “Die Maschinenstürmer” – is, I hear, one of the stage sensations of Berlin at the moment.
